Softball Report: Dominican wins district, Ben Franklin posts league win

Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, March 27

Dominican clinched the Catholic League title with a 6-4 win over Mount Carmel Academy at the JPRD Complex in Metairie.

Hope Couvillion and Megan McCartney each had a two-run double. Elise Simon picked up the win as Dominican (14-2, 5-0) swept its two-game series with the Cubs.

Mount Carmel (5-9, 2-3) got a two-run home run from Addison Grundmeyer and an RBI single from Ashley Ortiz. Mia Pumila took the loss for the Cubs.

Dominican will play at John Curtis Christian Thursday at 5 p.m. while Mount Carmel entertains Hahnville Thursday at 4 p.m. at JPRD.

Ben Franklin handled Carver 17-8 in District 10-4A action Tuesday.

The Rams scored a run in the top of the first but the Falcons answered with five runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Carver cut the deficit to 5-4 with three runs in the top of the second.

Ben Franklin (5-5, 2-1) got a couple of runs in the top of the third to make it 7-4 before the Rams scored a run in the top of the third to make it 7-5.

Carver (3-2, 2-1) took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it 8-7. Ben Franklin took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs to make it 12-8 and put the game away with three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Jasmin Elnaggar drove in four runs while Tamera Gause had two hits and three RBI. Audrey Mann had two hits and an RBI, Sydney Fleming had a hit and two RBI and Eva Coman added an RBI for the Falcons.

Olivia Dodart picked up the win, going six and one-third innings. She allowed four earned runs on five hits. She walked seven and struck out six.

Both teams return to action Thursday. Ben Franklin will take on McDonogh 35 at 6 p.m. while Carver plays Riverdale at 4 p.m.
