Softball: Ponchatoula wins district, Country Day stays unbeaten

Area Prep Softball Report for Thursday, April 6

Ponchatoula captured the District 6-5A championship, blasting rival Hammond 15-0 in a game shortened to three innings by the mercy rule.

The Green Wave scored once in the first before breaking it open with 12 runs in the second and ending it with two in the bottom of the third.

Christina Curtis had two hits and three RBI while Faith Hebert homered and drove in two runs. Abby Dagro had two hits and two RBI and Grace Schwaibold went 4 for 4 with an RBI. Sydni Stanga had two hits and an RBI.

Schwaibold pitched a three-inning no-hitter, walking one and striking out four.

Ponchatoula (21-10, 6-0) has won four straight. The Green Wave will travel to Doyle next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

The Tornadoes (3-14-1, 0-6) will host St. Thomas Aquinas next Monday at 4 p.m.

Country Day remained unbeaten, drilling Warren Easton 17-2 at the JPRD Complex in a game shortened to four innings.

Trailing 1-0, the Cajuns scored five runs in the bottom of the second, four in the third and eight runs in the fourth to end it. The Eagles got their other run in the third.

Jane Gambel had two hits and four RBI, Ellie Schmidt had three hits and two RBI, Julia Mueller had two hits and three RBI and Hayden Moore had two hits and two RBI. Maggie Schneider had two hits and an RBI and Ellie Schneider added two hits and an RBI. Ellie Schneider picked up the win, going three innings.

Country Day (20-0) tries for an unbeaten regular season against a good St. Charles Catholic team in LaPlace today at 4:30 p.m.

Warren Easton (8-8) returns to District 11-4A play, hosting Carver Thursday at 4 p.m.

John Ehret won at St. Martin’s 18-8.

The Patriots took a 2-1 lead after one inning and scored five in the top of the second to grab a 7-1 lead. The Saints cut the deficit to 7-4 with three runs in the third but Ehret scored five runs in the top of the fourth to lead 12-4. St. Martin’s scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and it was 12-6. Ehret scored three in the fifth while the Saints scored twice and it was 15-8. The Patriots finished it off with three runs in the seventh inning.

Aiyanna Atchison had three hits with two RBI and two runs scored and Baylee Kelly had three hits and two RBI.

Abrielle Langford had two hits and five RBI.

Abigail Gisclair picked up the win with Briana Garcia finishing up on the mound for the Patriots.

John Ehret (15-4) will host South Terrebonne next Monday at 10:30 a.m.

St. Martin’s completed its regular season at 9-6.

In a wild contest at Chalmette, Riverside Academy outlasted the Owls 19-15.

Trailing 15-13, the Rebels tied it with two runs in the top of the sixth and won it with four runs in the seventh inning.

Alainah Felton had a monster game at the plate with a homer, two singles and seven RBI and scored three runs. Ava Fernandez had two doubles and two RBI. Chloe St. Pierre had two doubles, a single and two RBI. Corrin Cashio had two hits and three RBI.

Riverside (13-9) will host McGehee Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Chalmette (15-8) will entertain Dominican next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
