Softball: Ponchatoula, Academy of Our Lady victorious

Area Prep Softball Report for Sunday, Mar. 1

Ponchatoula completed a three-game sweep in the Albany Tournament with a pair of wins Saturday, winning both games in convincing fashion.

The Green Wave downed Chalmette 7-1.

The Owls scored first in the top of the second but the Green Wave then scored seven unanswered runs to post the victory.

Ponchatoula scored four runs in the bottom of the third, one in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth inning.

Cameron Dionne belted a home run and drove in two runs and Lily Crittenden had a hit and two RBI while Skylar Cheek and Julia Oubre each had two hits and an RBI to lead a 14-hit attack for the Green Wave. Crittenden pitched a complete game four-hitter, walking three while striking out five, using 104 pitches for the victory.

The Green Wave hammered Pearl River 19-4 in a game shortened to four innings by the mercy rule.

The Rebels actually jumped on Ponchatoula immediately, taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but it was all Green Wave the rest of the way.

Ponchatoula scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning to make it 6-3. After Pearl River make it 6-4 in the top of the second, the Green Wave scored four runs in the bottom of the third to make it 10-3 and ended it with nine runs in the fourth inning.

Sadie Wells had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and four RBI while Cheek, Crittenden and Oubre each had three hits and three RBI to pace a 13-hit attack for the Green Wave. Corinne LeBlanc picked up the win, going the distance, allowing three earned runs on five hits, overcoming seven walks. LeBlanc struck out four, using 98 pitches.

Ponchatoula (3-1) returns to action Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Franklinton

Playing at home, Academy of Our Lady handled Riverdale 13-3 in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.

The Penguins trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when they scored eight runs to take control. Academy of Our Lady added two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 13-1. The Rebels scored twice in the top of the fifth but it was not enough to extend the game.

Alyssa Hartman had two hits and four RBI, Gina Escude homered drove in two runs while Faith Hardy and Cambre Vegas each had two hits and an RBI to pace an 11-hit attack for the Penguins. Hardy picked up the win, going all five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. She walked four and struck out four, using 74 pitches.

Academy of Our Lady (2-1) returns to action Monday at 4:30 p.m. in River Ridge against John Curtis Christian.
