Softball Playoffs: Local teams advance Friday in opening round games

Nine area teams advanced with first round playoff victories Friday.

In Class 5A No. 12 Hahnville handled No. 21 Comeaux 10-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

McKenna Cortez was fabulous, belting a pair of 3-run home runs while Montana Smith and Kat Smith also homered for the Tigers.

Hahnville advances to play at No. 5 Ouachita Parish in the regional round.

No. 7 Northshore had no problem with No. 26 Chalmette, winning 10-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. Montana Young pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12 for the Panthers. Dee Dee West paced the offense with five RBI, including a grand slam.

Northshore advances to play at No. 23 Destrehan in the regional round.

The Wildcats shocked No. 10 Mandeville 1-0.

Tyler Oubre went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 to pick up the win. Destrehan broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh on a trick play with Gia Zeringue stealing home for the win.

In Class 4A, No. 8 Lakeshore handled No. 25 Karr 17-0 in a game shortened to three innings. The Titans advance to the regional round to host No. 9 Buckeye on Tuesday.

No. 5 Franklinton avoided the upset bid of No. 28 Westgate with a 5-4 victory. The Demons move on to host No. 12 Franklin Parish on Tuesday.

No. 7 Belle Chasse blasted No. 26 Bastrop 22-1 in three innings at Robert Lewis Field.

Kelsey Johnson and Bela Dekovic each homered in a 10-run first inning and the Cardinals coasted to victory. They advance to host No. 10 Lutcher in the regional round.

In 3A, No. 16 St. James downed No. 17 West Feliciana 10-7. The Wildcats advance to play at No. 1 Brusly on Tuesday.

In Class 2A, No. 11 Fisher edged No. 22 Springfield 6-5. The Gators move on to the regional round to play at sixth-seeded Loreauville.

In Division III regional round, No. 6 Northlake Christian had to go eight innings to edge No. 11 St. Thomas Aquinas 6-5. The Wolverines will play the winner of No. 3 Holy Savior Menard and No. 14 St. Katharine in the quarterfinals.

In all, there have been 50 mercy rule games in the opening round of the playoffs.
