Softball Playoffs: Haynes, Patrick Taylor advance to quarterfinals in Division II

A pair of outstanding schools known for high level academics are excelling in softball.

Top seed Haynes Academy and sixth seed Patrick Taylor have advanced to the Ochsner LHSAA Division II state quarterfinals.

At LaSalle, Haynes dismissed No. 16 Evangel Christian 14-0 in four and a half innings.

Haynes softballThe Lady Yellow Jackets scored in all four innings, putting up four runs in the first, three in the second, six in the third and a run in the fourth inning.

Delaney Walker hurled four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and struck out four to improve to 15-5 on the season.

Hailey Peterson pitched the final inning, allowing no hits and striking out two.

Peterson and Melissa Lopera each had a pair of hits as part of an eight-hit attack for Haynes.

Jordan Miller had both hits for Lady Eagles (9-17), who committed four errors.

Haynes (24-5) advances to the quarterfinals Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 9 David Thibodeaux at Harahan Playground. David Thibodaux downed No. 8 Thomas Jefferson 10-7 on Tuesday.

No. 6 Patrick Taylor advanced to the round of eight with a 4-3 victory over No. 11 Lusher Charter at Westwego Playground.

Patrick Taylor scored a run in the bottom of the first inning as Ashtyn Rogers singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt all the way to third and scored on an infield single. The Lady Tigers added another run in the third and put up two more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Paige Zippert produced a two-run double in the top of the sixth for the Lady Lions (10-6) to cut the deficit to 4-3 but could get no closer.

Patrick Taylor (13-8) will travel to No. 3 Vandebilt Catholic Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Terriers bounced No. 14 St. Michael 17-7 in six innings.
