Prep Softball Playoff Report for Friday, April 12

The state softball playoffs got underway with 38 games.

Of those 38 games, 23 turned out to be shortened the mercy rule in blowouts. Do you sense a pattern here?

In Class 5A, No. 14 Ponchatoula overcame a slow start before overcoming No. 19 Natchitoches Central 15-3 in five innings in a game shortened by the mercy rule.

Corinne LeBlanc picked up the win for the Green Wave (21-6).

Ponchatoula advances to play at No. 3 Barbe in the regional round. The Bucs easily defeated No. 13 Southwood 14-0 in five innings.

In Central Louisiana, No. 11 Pineville eliminated No. 22 Fontainebleau 6-4.

Adelle Chapman stole the Show with a pair of home runs and five RBI for the Rebels. Haley Martin belted a three-run home run for the Bulldogs (13-8).

Pineville (19-6) advances to the regional round to play the winner of No. 6 Denham Springs and No. 27 Ruston.

In Class 4A, No. 15 Pearl River outscored No. 18 Plaquemine 18-10 at home. It was the first playoff win in 11 years for the Rebels.

After Plaquemine (11-12) plated a run in the top of the first inning, Pearl River started very fast, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Green Devils answered with six runs in the top of the second but the Rebels responded with six in the bottom of the second and it was 15-6.

Plaquemine got four runs in the third to make it 15-10 but Pearl River finished it off with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.

Serenity Burge was 3-for-3, including a base-clearing triple while Alexis Wadsworth had a two-run double. Landry Frey added a two-run single.

Wadsworth was the winning pitcher.

Pearl River (16-8) advances to face the winner of No. 2 North DeSoto and No. 31 Ellender in the regional round.

In 3A, No. 11 Albany scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, belting a pair of home runs and never looked back in an easy 12-0 victory over No. 22 Eunice in a game shortened to five innings.

Albany (22-9) added five more runs in the second inning before finishing it off.

The Hornets advance to play at No. 6 Erath in the regional round. Erath blasted No. 27 Carroll 21-0 in three innings.

In Division III, No. 10 Country Day avenged a regular season loss to No. 7 Patrick Taylor, beating the Tigers 9-5 at Westwego Playground.

The Cajuns (11-7) advance to play at No. 2 Calvary Baptist on April 20 at 11 a.m.
