Nicholls blasted in series rubber game at UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UIW totaled two home runs and two triples to hand the Nicholls State University softball team a 9-1 loss in six innings Saturday at HEB Field.

With the setback, Nicholls slipped to 9-20 overall and 1-2 in Southland play. UIW improved to 10-20 and 2-1.

Despite the loss, outfielder Alexa Poche’ had an outstanding day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a home run and one double. She blasted her seventh homer of the season in the sixth to make the score 7-1, but UIW followed with two runs in the bottom half for the walkoff win.

Brittney Turner took the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Paris Lehman and Taryn Westbrook each pitched and allowed two runs.

Bella Sanchez and Aaliyah Garcia led UIW with two hits each and a combined four RBIs. The duo hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

Ashley Trapp threw all seven innings, striking out 12 batters. She issued two walks while scattering seven hits.

Nicholls will head back on the road next weekend for a three-game series at Northwestern State. Game times are TBA.
