Softball: Mount Carmel edges John Curtis, Haynes wins district
Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, March 22, 2023
John Curtis Christian has been the chalk, the measuring stick in District 9-5A and in Division I softball for several years.
The Patriots may still be that team down the road but they hit a roadblock Tuesday.
Chloe Krey pitched and hit Mount Carmel Academy to a 2-1 victory over two-time defending state champion John Curtis in River Ridge.
Krey pitched a complete game, allowing just a run on five hits and she doubled home a run in the first inning to give the Cubs an early lead, scoring Bailey Nelson, who had started the game with a single.
John Curtis (17-5, 0-1) tied the game in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Katie Kempton.
Mount Carmel scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the second on a triple by Colby Pechon and an RBI single by Nelson to make it 2-1 and Krey made the lead stand up.
Krey had two hits while Nelson had three hits for the Cubs. Gabby Miller had three hits and scored a run for John Curtis. Madison Laiche took the loss, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits. Laiche struck out eight.
With the win, Mount Carmel (11-6, 2-0) takes the early lead in the District 9-5A race, along with much improved Archbishop Chapelle (17-2, 2-0). The Chipmunks have won eight straight games after drilling Dominican 13-1 in district play Tuesday.
Haynes Academy captured its fourth consecutive District 9-3A softball title with a 17-2 victory over New Orleans Science & Math on Tuesday in a game shortened to two and a half innings by the mercy rule.
Hailey Peterson (10-6) and Finley Cressend took care of business on the mound for the Yellow Jackets. Peterson starred at the plate with a home run and a triple.
Melissa Lopera and Ella Lewis each had a pair of hits.
Haynes (11-6, 5-0) will return to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Riverdale at Jefferson Playground.
The Chambered Nautilus (4-6, 2-3) will play at Abramson Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
