THIBODAUX, La. – Senior pitcher Megan Landry tossed her 18th complete game for the Nicholls State University softball team and reached 20 wins for the second straight season, as the Colonels won their 10th consecutive game with an 8-1 victory over HBU Saturday afternoon on Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Landry won 22 games in her junior campaign and claimed her 20th this season to cap an impressive 9-0 week for the Colonels at home. Nicholls improved to 26-16 overall and 15-3 in the Southland Conference, clinching a spot in next month’s Southland Conference Tournament in Natchitoches.

The Pierre Part native struck out seven and allowed just three hits, with one being a solo home run by Heidi Jaquez that ended the shutout bid in the sixth. Landry went on to strike out four the rest of the way for the complete game, improving to 20-8.

Much like most of the Colonels’ current 10-game winning streak, the offense started fast with another two-run inning in the first. Nicholls then scored a pair in the second, fifth and sixth innings and totaled 13 hits in the game.

Kasey Frederick and Caitlin Garcia led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Emma Holland and Samantha Dares also had two hits, and Amanda Gianelloni extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the second.

The Colonels had four hits against HBU starter Elliot Estes (5-6) in the opening frame, grabbing a 2-0 advantage. Dares stroked a single to right center for an RBI and Melise Gossen had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

In the second, Frederick doubled in a pair for a 4-0 advantage. Over her last four games, Frederick went 7 for 12 at the plate with two doubles, two homers, and six RBIs.

An HBU error helped out the Colonels in the fifth on a Garcia run-scoring single. With two on, Garcia smacked a base hit to center for an RBI and another run scored after Riley Bullen misplayed the ball.

The final two runs came in the sixth on a Gossen single to left center and a Garcia sac fly.

Nicholls will head to Southern Miss on Tuesday, April 16 for its final nonconference matchup of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nicholls and USM meet earlier this season in Thibodaux with Colonels taking a 4-1 decision.
