Softball: Kenner Discovery, Ben Franklin, Pope John Paul II score wins Thursday

Area Prep Softball Report for Friday, April 7

Kenner Discovery handled Ellender 11-4 at home Thursday.

The Swamp Owls took a 2-1 lead after one inning but Ellender scored three runs in the top of the second to lead 4-2. The Swamp Owls answered with three runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead and played add-on the rest of the way, scoring two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Youth was served as a host of young players came through in big fashion for Kenner Discovery.

Eighth-grader Lundyn Allen had three hits, including a triple and an RBI with three runs scored while eighth-grader Liza Biancato also had three hits, including a double and an RBI. Freshman Sophia Carona had a hit and two RBI and Curry Miller had two hits. Freshman Kiley Tringle had two hits and an RBI and sophomore Jaylyn Varela had a hit and an RBI.

Biancato pitched four scoreless, hitless innings, allowing four walks and striking out 10 for the win. Tringle and Leah Tejeda finished up for the Swamp Owls.

Kenner Discovery (11-8) will host Thibodaux next Tuesday at 5 p.m. while the Patriots (1-25) will host McMain next Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Ben Franklin blanked Cabrini 2-0 to take sole possession of first place in District 11-4A.

Maia Tyler pitched the shutout, scattering seven hits for the win while striking out six.

The Falcons got both runs in the fourth inning, loading the bases and scoring both runs on a hard-hit ground ball by Gabriel Henry which was unable to be fielded cleanly

Mick Richoux took the loss for the Crescents despite pitching well.

Ben Franklin (9-6, 5-0) will host Karr Monday at 5 p.m. before taking on Warren Easton next Tuesday. A win over the Eagles would give the Falcons the outright district title.

Cabrini (14-10, 5-1) will host St. Michael next Monday at 2 p.m.

Pope John Paul II defeated Franklinton 8-6 at home.

After falling behind 2-0, the Jaguars scored six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-2 lead. The Demons got a run in the third and it was 6-3 before Pope John Paul added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to make it 8-3. Franklinton rallied for three runs in the seventh inning but fell short.

Baleigh Tillison tripled, doubled and singled and drove in three runs while Hannah Potter, Kasia Rodriguez and Malorie Whitten each drove in a run.

Ashley Chighizola went the distance to pick up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. Chighizola walked no one and struck out four.

Pope John Paul II (18-6) will next travel to St. Amant Monday at 5:30 p.m.

Franklinton (11-10) will travel to Albany Monday at 6 p.m.
