Area Prep Softball Report for Wednesday, Feb. 24

Whenever Hahnville and Destrehan compete in athletics, it is a special moment in time.

The two St. Charles Parish rivals have a spirited, healthy rivalry and that was evident again on Tuesday.

At Boutte, Hahnville rallied to force extra innings before prevailing 5-4 over Destrehan in nine innings.

The game was tied 1-1 after one inning before Destrehan took the lead with a run in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats plated two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

That is when Hahnville awakened, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The key blow was a 2-run double by Lauren Chrochet.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth inning.

Sara Roussel led off the frame with a triple and scored when Makenna Cortez grounded to second. Cortez was thrown out at first base while Roussel broke for the plate. The throw home was just late and the Lady Tigers had a huge win, their first of the season.

Laney Waguespack started in the circle and went three and two-third innings for the Lady Tigers before Makenzie Klibert came on and was superb, holding Destrehan scoreless the rest of the way, covering five and one-third innings.

UL Ragin’ Cajun signee Tyler Oubre went the distance, taking the loss for the Lady Wildcats.

“It was a great game,” Hahnville coach Jerry Nugent said. “Anytime you win in walk-off fashion is exciting. Basically, we got off to a rocky start with a couple of errors in the first inning before we righted ourselves. There were tremendous plays defensively on both sides. It is always a tough, spirited game when we play each other.”

Destrehan (2-1) returns to action Thursday at home against St. James at 3:30 p.m.

Hahnville (1-2) returns to action against powerful St. Amant Wednesday at home at 3:30 p.m.

“That will be a real test,” Nugent said. “St. Amant is one of the top two teams in the state in 5A.”
