Area Prep Softball Report for Friday, Mar. 8

With only three starters returning from last year’s team which reached the Class 5A state championship game, the challenge to repeat that success and the consistent success of the Hahnville program is more challenging for Jerry Nugent and his squad.

The young Tigers are a work in progress, growing game by game and showing great progress.

That was evident Thursday at Destrehan as the visiting Tigers edged the rival Wildcats 2-1 in a non-district contest.

Hahnville scored on a two out single Kate Bruce in the top of the second inning before sophomore Katherine Smith had an RBI double in the fourth inning to make it 2-0. Destrehan (2-7) cut the deficit in half on a home run by Emma Rome in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough.

Freshman Hailey Beard was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits to pick up the win. Taylor Oubre pitched well in defeat for Destrehan.

“I was very proud of the way we played,” Nugent said. “It was the kind of game we needed. We are playing better now. We have won four straight now. It was one of those battles in a game we kind of expected. We played with a lot of poise. That’s the kind of game you have to play and win if you want to go far in the 5A playoffs. That was a big win for us in this rivalry, in the atmosphere on the road. You could feel it from the jump that it would be that kind of game.

The district game between the two rivals will be played on April 2 at Hahnville.

Hahnville plays Zachary tonight at Gonzales at 6 p.m. in the St. Amant Tournament while Destrehan is back in action today, hosting Chalmette at 3:30 p.m.
