Softball: Franklinton handles Salmen, Fontainebleau edges Slidell
Area Prep Softball Report for Friday, Mar. 15
A pair of District 8-4A rivals hooked up Thursday at Franklinton and the home team was simply too much for visiting Salmen.
Franklinton jumped on top early and never let up in a 14-1 victory over the Spartans in a game shortened to four and a half innings by the mercy rule.
The Demons scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and another run in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Franklinton put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Salmen got a run in the top of the fifth but it was not enough to extend the game.
Aleigha Fussell went the distance, allowing one run on two hits to pick up the win. Fussell walked one and struck out two. Brylie Fowler had four hits and two RBI while Albanie Fussell had two hits and two RBI to pace a 13-hit attack for the Demons (10-3). Kiersten Allen and M. Varnado also drove in a pair of runs for Franklinton.
The Demons return to action today, hosting Northlake Christian at 5 p.m. The Spartans (0-10) remained winless and will host Pope John Paul II Monday at 5:30 p.m.
In a District 6-5A contest, Fontainebleau edged Slidell 2-1 in Covington.
The Lady Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and added a big insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to lead 2-0. The Lady Tigers scored their run in the top of the sixth inning.
Macy Castleman and Chantel Schurr each drove in a run for Fontainebleau (7-3, 3-3) while Ashley Chiasson and Grace Saizan each had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs. Abby Whitworth drove in the run for Slidell.
Castleman picked up the win, going five strong innings and striking out five. Fontainebleau returns to action Tuesday at Lakeshore at 5 p.m. while Slidell (5-10, 2-2) hosts Northshore Tuesday at 4 p.m. in district play.
