Softball: Country Day stays unbeaten, Pope John Paul, Patrick Taylor, Fisher win Wednesday

Area Prep Softball Report for Thursday, March 30

Country Day continued its amazing season Wednesday, blasting Salmen 20-4 in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Senior Ellie Schneider improved to 13-0, striking out nine to pick up the victory. Schneider also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs.

The 20 runs were a season high for the Cajuns, who banged out 19 hits and stole 21 bases.

Sophomore Jane Gambel was 3 for 4 with three RBI while seventh-grader Mia Ennis was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Ellie Schmidt, Maggie Schneider, Zoe Senette, Julia Courcelle and Emily Champagne each had two hits while Addie Lund and Laney Hebert each drove in a run.

Country Day (18-0) will host St. Mary’s Academy next Tuesday at the JPRD Complex at 5 p.m. on Senior Night.

The Spartans (2-13) will entertain Loranger Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in a District 8-4A game.

Make it nine straight wins for Pope John Paul II.

The Jaguars rolled on Wednesday, defeating Pearl River 11-3 in Slidell.

Pearl River scored a run in the top of the first before the Jaguars put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Rebels got two in the second inning to make it 6-3 but the Jaguars pulled away with a run in the bottom of the second before scoring twice more in the fourth and fifth innings.

Kayla Benedic homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Pope John Paul, Kasia Rodriguez had three hits and two RBI while Payton Callahan had two hits and two RBI. Hannah Potter contributed two his and an RBI.

Ashley Chighizola pitched a complete game four-hitter, allowing two earned runs, using just 86 pitches.

Pope John Paul II (16-3) will next play host Mandeville in the Mandeville Tournament beginning Friday at 4 p.m.

Pearl River (6-9) will play at Franklinton Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in a District 8-4A contest.

Patrick Taylor is a red hot team.

The Tigers have won 11 straight games after edging Chalmette 6-5 Wednesday.

Ashtyn Rogers went the distance to pick up the win for Patrick Taylor. Rogers had an RBI to help her own cause.

Jadon Russel had two RBI while Kadence Cannon while Adeline Alcantar and Veronica Bourgeois each drove in a run.

The Tigers (14-2) face Belle Chasse at 4:30pm today in Belle Chasse. The Owls (12-5) saw their six-game win streak end and will return to action Thursday at 4 p.m. at East Jefferson.

Pearl River (6-9) returns to action Thursday at Franklinton at 5:30 p.m. in District 8-4A play.

Fisher went to H.L. Bourgeois and won 4-2.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before the Gators tied it in the top of the third. Fisher grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth before H.L. Bourgeois pulled within 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Gators scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

Cali Harvey and Rilee Smith each had two hits and an RBI while Laken Chauvin added a hit and an RBI for Fisher. Gabrielle St. Ann went the distance to pick up the win, allowing a run on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Fisher (8-9) will host The Willow School Thursday at 4 p.m. while H.L. Bourgeois (7-17) will travel to Destrehan Thursday at 4 p.m. in a District 7-5A contest.
