THIBODAUX, La. – Junior Samantha Dares ripped a bases-clearing double to cap a six-run second inning and Megan Landry tossed six shutout frames as the Nicholls State University softball team swept UIW with a 7-0 victory Wednesday afternoon on Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

Nicholls has won seven straight games to improve to 23-16 overall and more importantly, remained in first place in the Southland with a 12-3 record.

The Colonels totaled 12 hits in the victory, with half coming in the second inning. After failing to score in the opening frame for the first time in seven games, Nicholls responded in a big way with the six-run inning in the second.

Samantha Mracich brought in the first run on a fielder’s choice, then Amanda Gianelloni followed with a run-scoring double. Emma Holland made it 3-0 after reaching on an infield single, setting up Dares’ two-out double to left center that doubled the Colonel lead at 6-0.

The inning provided Landry (18-8) with more than enough run support to work with. She gave up a leadoff single in the third and it was not until the sixth that UIW (4-30, 2-13) threatened to score. The Cardinals used a pair of one-out singles to put runners on the corners, but Landry got the next two batters to fly out to keep the shutout. She finished the start with six shutouts in 6.0 innings pitched. Alexis LaBure struck out one in the seventh.

Four Colonels had multi-hit games with Holland, Dares, Caitlin Garcia and Kasey Frederick finishing with two each. Corynn Major brought in the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Brett Coleman suffered the loss for UIW, lasting 1.2 innings with six earned runs on six hits. Renee Hoffman threw the rest of the outing, allowing a run on four hits.
