THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team fell 4-3 to Sam Houston State on Saturday, dropping just their second home Southland Conference since 2016.

Megan Landry made her third start of the weekend and was able to rebound from a first-inning 3-run home run, but Megan McDonald slapped a triple down the line in the seventh with two outs to plate the game-winning run. The Colonels went down in order in the bottom half against Lindsey McLeod, who earned both wins for Sam Houston in the series.

Nicholls (16-16, 6-3 SLC) had seven hits off McLeod and scored in the second before tying the game in the fourth with two runs. Kali Clement, Caitlin Garcia, and Kasey Frederick all had two hits apiece, and Melise Gossen had two RBIs.

Landry (13-8) pitched all 21 innings for the Colonels in the series and allowed four earned runs on six hits in the finale. Sam Houston (16-18, 8-4 SLC) jumped on her early when Ashley Goetz hit a 3-run shot for her first homer of the season.

But Landry settled in and scattered two hits in the next five innings before the Bearkats took the lead for good in the seventh.

The Colonels’ first run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by Gossen. Kali Clement continued her hot-hitting with a leadoff single in the frame and Garcia put runners in scoring position with a double. But after scoring with one out, Nicholls left a runner on third to keep the score at 3-1.

In the fourth, Clement and Garcia had base hits again to load the bases with no outs, setting up an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Gossen. Frederick stroked a single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3, but the Colonels would end up leaving two on base.

For the final inning, McDonald’s triple stayed inches inside the foul line in left field and just out of the reach of a diving Mallery Marino.

Emma Holland, who singled earlier in the game, flew out to center to end the series.
Nicholls will host Southern University on Wednesday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
