THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team earned its first victory of the season Tuesday with a 9-1 win over Alcorn in six innings on Swanner Field at GeoSurfaces Park.

Nicholls led 2-1 after two innings and used a bases-clearing double by Melise Gossen in the third to go up four. After adding a run in the fifth, the Colonels took advantage of three Lady Brave errors in the sixth for the walkoff victory.

Emily Danehower (1-1) picked up the win as she surrendered just three hits and struck out seven. Alcorn’s (1-4) lone run came in the opening inning after a leadoff error led to an Amari Ramsey sac fly.

Samantha Dares tied the game in the bottom half with an RBI single to center, then Jaida Choice put Nicholls (1-5) ahead in the second with a double to leftcenter.

In the third, Dares, Caitlin Garcia and Kennedy Hebert led off the frame with walks and Gossen snuck a 2-0 pitch down the third base line for double and a 5-2 advantage. Gossen led Nicholls with two hits and three RBIs.

With Danehower still cruising in the fifth, Scout Blades added another run on an RBI fielder’s choice.

For the final inning, Mallery Marino and Emma Holland drew walks and then scored on a wild throw to third on a stolen base. Two more errors resulted in Dares scoring for the run-rule victory.

Corynn Major joined Gossen with two hits, while Hebert and Dares scored two runs each. In the circle, Jordan Moon pitched the sixth with a strikeout and one hit.

Alcorn’s Kiri Parker was tagged with the loss, allowing five earned runs in 2.0 innings.
