THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team pushed its winning streak to six games following 7-1 and 6-3 victories against UIW Tuesday at Swanner Field at Geo Surfaces Park.

The two games were part of a makeup series versus UIW (4-29, 2-12 SLC), which was scheduled to come to Thibodaux on March 15. The teams will conclude the series Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Nicholls (22-16, 11-3 SLC) used a pair of two-run first innings to jump on the Cardinals in both games. In the sweep, the Colonels out-hit UIW, 20-12, and had just one error to the visitors’ five. Samantha Dares fueled the offense with four hits and four RBIs.

In game one, Megan Landry (17-8) went the distance for the seventh consecutive start, striking out six while allowing five hits. The lone run to score for UIW was unearned in the fourth.

The fast start in the opening inning began after Kasey Frederick tripled to left with two outs. She then scored on a wild throw to second on a Kali Clement stolen base and Dares made it 2-0 with a single to center.

Nicholls doubled the lead in the second on a Samantha Mracich fielder’s choice followed by an RBI from Emma Holland.

After UIW’s run in the fourth, Caitlin Garcia snuck one inside the right field line for a run-scoring triple and a 5-1 lead. Nicholls scored the final two runs in the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Dares and Melise Gossen.

Dares, Gossen, Holland and Amanda Gianelloni each hits two hits against Renee Hoffman (1-12), who allowed 11 hits with six earned runs and struck out two in six innings.

For game two, Emily Danehower (3-0) posted another solid start with 4.1 innings and Alexis LaBure tossed 2.2 innings and struck out two for her first save of the season.

Dares once again contributed to the quick start with a 2-run single in the first. In the fourth, Corynn Major and Mracich reached on infield singles, driving in a run each for a 4-0 lead.

UIW made things interesting in the fifth, tagging Danehower for four hits. With the bases loaded and one out, Monica Flores singled to left to cut the deficit to 4-1. LaBure, who had five saves last season as a freshman, entered the game and retired the next two batters to leave the bases full.

In the bottom half, the Colonels caught a break with a two-out error for two more runs. But then with two down in the seventh, UIW got the two back when Flores homered to left. LaBure went on to end the game with a swinging strikeout.

Dares and Major each had two hits to lead the offense.
