Soccer: Top seed Pope John Paul II earns another boys state title game appearance

Top seed and defending boys state champion Pope John Paul II is returning to the Division IV state championship game for a second straight year after shutting out No. 5 Ascension Episcopal 3-0 Friday at home for their 11th consecutive victory.

The match was scoreless until late in the first half when Brenden Kuzminski put in what turned out to be the game-winner to give the Jaguars a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Nicholas Barone and Patrick Whitehouse each added a goal to propel the Jaguars to an impressive win.

The Jaguars (16-1-5) will play the winner of today’s match between No. 10 Newman and No. 3 Episcopal in the state title game with the championship match set for 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Strawberry Stadium.

Pope John Paul II downed Episcopal 2-1 in the title match a year ago.

Several area teams are in semifinal action today.

On the boys side in Division I, No. 3 St. Paul’s hosts No. 10 Dutchtown at 5:30 p.m. at Hunter Stadium. You can watch it live on CrescentCitySports.com.

In Division II, No. 6 Lakeshore travels to No. 2 Caddo Magnet at 1:30 p.m. at Lee Hedges Stadium.

In Division III, No. 3 Lusher Charter plays at No. 2 University High at 6:30 p.m.

In Division IV, No. 10 Newman plays at No. 3 Episcopal at 2 p.m.

In girls semifinal action, No. 1 Dominican plays host to No. 5 Dutchtown at 3:30 p.m. at Pan American Stadium while No. 3 Northshore is at No. 2 St. Joseph’s Academy at 5:30 p.m. at the Burbank Complex.

In Division II, No. 6 Lakeshore faces No. 2 Caddo Magnet at 1:30 p.m. at Lee Hedges Stadium.

In Division III, No. 5 Archbishop Hannan plays at No. 1 University High.

In Division IV, No. 9 McGehee travels to No. 4 Ouachita Christian at 1 p.m. while No. 7 Academy of the Sacred Heart entertains No. 11 Episcopal of Acadiana at 4 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium.
