Soccer: St. Paul’s sweeps Brother Martin, Jesuit; Mount Carmel hands Mandeville first loss
There is no doubt that four-time defending state champion St. Paul’s remains the best team in Louisiana this season. For that matter, the Wolves are one of the best teams in the country.
The Wolves swept a pair of matches against solid teams in its own tournament Friday, blanking Brother Martin 3-0 before downing Jesuit 2-0 for the second time this season.
In the win over the Crusaders, it was the Justin Savoie show. Savoie accounted for all Wolves goals with a hat trick. In the victory over the Blue Jays, Colin Moser led the way, scoring another goal. Moser has nine on the season while Savoie has 13.
To illustrate their dominance, the Wolves (13-1) have posted 13 shutouts this season, allowing just one goal.
The Wolves enjoy time off before hosting Newman on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.
In girls action, Mount Carmel handed Mandeville its first loss, winning 2-0 on the north shore.
Senior Ava Maraldo was the star for the Cubs. Maraldo scored in the 16th minute to make it 1-0 and added an insurance goal in the 61st minute.
The win was the tenth straight for the Cubs (16-1). The Cubs return to action next Wednesday against St. Joseph’s Academy at 3 p.m. in the Lakeshore Tournament. The Skippers (12-1) fell to 12-1 with the defeat.
