Soccer: SSA slips by MCA, Holy Cross blanks Vandebilt Catholic

Area Prep Soccer Report for Sunday, Jan. 13

It was a showdown Saturday between two of the top teams in Division I girls soccer at Covington.

In the end, St. Scholastica edged Mount Carmel Academy 1-0.

After a scoreless first half, senior Sydney Vincens put the game-winner in the net on an assist from junior Olivia Lacava. Senior captain Elizabeth Kalmbach made it stand up, pitching a shutout in goal as the Doves remained unbeaten (11-0-3).

St. Scholastica was second, behind only Mandeville, in the most recent LHSAA Division I power rankings while the Cubs were eighth.

SSA returns to action Tuesday at 5:30 pm at home against Ponchatoula while Mount Carmel (13-4-7) will face Academy of The Sacred Heart Tuesday at 7 pm at Pan American Stadium.

In boys action, it was a showdown between defending state champions at Houma.

It was no contest.

Holy Cross jumped all over Vandebilt Catholic early, scoring all three goals in the first half in a 3-0 victory.

Ethan Garvey, Josue Fuentes and Brenden Folse each scored a goal for the Tigers.

Holy Cross (15-3-2) returns to action Tuesday at home against Archbishop Rummel while the Terriers (5-8-3) will host Lutcher Thursday at 6 pm.
