LAFAYETTE, La. – Following the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team will resume play Friday night at 6 p.m. on the road against UL Lafayette at the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Track and Soccer Complex.

As a result of Hurricane Ida’s direct hit to the Southeastern campus, the Lady Lions spent Wednesday night and will spend the remainder of Thursday in East Texas preparing for Friday’s match before departing for Lafayette Friday morning.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Black Student-Athlete Association are accepting donations during the match which will directly benefit the Lady Lions’ program. Fans attending Friday’s match are asked to bring non-perishable snacks, bottled water and sports drinks which will be collected by members of both organizations and delivered to the SLU Women’s Soccer program at the conclusion of the match.

The Lady Lions (1-2) defeated Alcorn State last Friday night at home, 11-0, tying an all-time program record for largest margin of victory. Ten different players scored for SLU led by reigning Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Makenzie Maher, who netted a pair of goals.

Southeastern, the preseason Southland favorites, enters Friday night in search of their first road win of the season. The Lady Lions pushed 27th-ranked Arizona State to the brink back on Aug. 22 in Tempe, Arizona. SLU led ASU 1-0 in the 80th minute before the Sun Devils rallied to score two goals in the final 10 minutes, including the game-winner with just 45 seconds left in regulation.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (1-3), under third-year head coach Lance Key, have lost three straight matches, all against the SEC. UL Lafayette was shut out by Mississippi State, Kentucky and 17th-ranked Tennessee.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are led by preseason All-Sun Belt selection Lizzy Mayfield. The senior forward had six goals and six assists in 2020 which led the team in both categories.

Friday marks the 15th meeting all-time between the Lady Lions and Ragin’ Cajuns with UL Lafayette holding a 7-4-3 advantage. Southeastern is 3-2-2 all-time on the road against the Ragin Cajuns with their last win in Lafayette coming on Aug. 24, 2014 when SLU shutout the Ragin’ Cajuns, 3-0.

The two teams met back on Aug. 31, 2018 with the match ending in a 1-1 tie as former Lady Lion Christian Cutura’s shot with just four seconds left in double overtime hit the cross bar.

Friday’s match is an ESPN+ broadcast with live video and stat links available at the Southeastern soccer schedule page located at LionSports.Net.
