Defending Division I state champion Mount Carmel is on a mission to repeat as champion in 2018.

The Cubs took another step toward that goal Tuesday, going on the road and winning at Ocean Springs, MS 2-1.

Sydney Blue and Maddy Murret scored for the Cubs, who have won nine straight matches. The only Mount Carmel loss was a 1-0 loss to Acadiana on Nov. 25. The Wreckin’ Rams are the top-ranked team in the most recent LHSAA Division I power ratings.

The Greyhounds fell to 8-6-1 with the defeat.

Mount Carmel (15-1) returns to action Friday at unbeaten Mandeville (11-0) at 5 p.m. in a showdown of two top teams in the state. The Cubs were ninth while the Skippers were third in the power ratings released by the LHSAA a week ago though Mount Carmel will surely rise.
