It was a solid season for Mandeville in girls soccer last school year.

The Skippers reached the regional round of the Division I state playoffs but lost a tough 3-2 decision to district rival Northshore. The Skippers are motivated to take it further this season and they got off to a good start Wednesday.

Katie Green scored a pair of goals to pace the Skippers to a 5-1 victory over visiting Denham Springs in the season opener for both squads.

Lauren Fayard opened the scoring for the Skippers with a goal in the 22nd minute. Eight minutes later, Macayla Bass scored from long distance, about 25 yards out, to make it 2-0 by halftime.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Katie Green added to the lead with a goal to make it 3-0. The Yellow Jackets made it closer when Mayer scored in the 55th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1 but Mandeville then pulled away as Green scored her second goal four minutes later before Maggie Sides ended the scoring with a goal in the 75th minute.

Mandeville returns to action this weekend in the Central Lafourche tournament while the Yellow Jackets will play at Lafayette in tournament action against Sulphur and Live Oak Friday and Saturday.
