Area Prep Soccer Report for Sunday, Jan. 20

It was a matchup pitting a pair of teams that could very well be in Lafayette playing for championships in late February.

When done, the home team prevailed in a very good contest.

Junior Erick Gunera scored a second half goal on an assist from sophomore Jose Castillo to lift East Jefferson to a 1-0 victory over Vandebilt Catholic at Joe Yenni Stadium Saturday morning.

East Jefferson (11-2-5) have not lost since falling to Northshore on Dec. 8. The Terriers (6-10-3) have lost four of their last five matches against an extremely difficult schedule.

East Jefferson is third in the most recent Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association poll in Division II while Vandebilt Catholic is seventh in the Division III poll. The Warriors were seventh in the most recent LHSAA Division II power rankings while the Terriers were tenth in Division III. East Jefferson reached the semifinals in Division II a year ago while Vandebilt Catholic is the defending Division III state champion.

The Warriors return to action Wednesday at 6:30 pm against Riverdale at Joe Yenni Stadium while Vandebilt Catholic will host St. Charles Catholic Monday at 6 pm.

In girls action, it was a matchup of two of the top teams in the state in Division I at Covington.

In the end, St. Scholastica edged Dominican 1-0 on a second half goal by sophomore Hailey Waterhouse. Senior Elizabeth Kalmbach made the goal stand up, pitching a shutout in goal as the Doves remained unbeaten (15-0-3).

It was the second win for SSA over Dominican this season. The Doves won 1-0 on Dec. 28 in the previous matchup. St. Scholastica was third in the most recent LHSAA Division 1 power rankings while Dominican was eighth in Division I.

St. Scholastica returns to action Tuesday, hosting Mandeville at 5:30 pm while Dominican (16-4-4) will host Baton Rouge Monday at 5 pm at Pan American Stadium.
