Soccer: Dominican wins district, Rummel closes regular season with win
Area Prep Soccer Report for Sunday, Jan. 30
You always want to be playing your best heading into the postseason.
That is certainly the case for Dominican.
In a rematch of the Division I championship game of a season ago, Dominican exacted revenge Saturday against its primary rival, shutting out Mount Carmel Academy 3-0 at Pan American Stadium for its 11th straight win.
It was the Kelsey Major show.
Major put on a major performance, scoring all three goals in the first half as Dominican controlled play from start to finish.
Mount Carmel edged Dominican, the top seed, 1-0 in the 2021 Division I state title match.
Dominican (24-1-1) is the top-ranked team in the LHSAA Division I power rankings and should be the top seed when playoff pairings are announced this week. Dominican has not lost a match in-state this season.
Mount Carmel (12-6-6) was ranked ninth and may not lose any position in playoff seedings, based on losing to the top-ranked team.
Archbishop Rummel wrapped up its fine regular season with a convincing 5-1 victory at home over Destrehan on Senior Day.
The Raiders led 3-0 at halftime.
Junior CJ Koppeis scored a pair of goals, including his 25th of the season and 50th of his Raider career. Senior Eric Ochoa, junior Tobo Takpor and sophomore Christopher Wallace each added a goal. Takpor now has 20 goals on the season for the second straight year. The Raiders have now scored 81 goals on the season, a school record.
M. Laumann scored the goal for the Wildcats on an assist by C. Ledet.
Rummel will be a top 10 seed, likely sixth or seventh overall, when the Division I pairings come out and will host a first-round contest.
