SLU’s Blackford, Nicholls’ Landry tabbed Southland Softball Players of the Week
Madisen Blackford charges Lady Lions in record-breaking week; Megan Landry allows just one run over 20 innings
FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana’s Madisen Blackford and Nicholls’ Megan Landry are the Southland Conference Softball Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. Southland Players of the Week are presented by MidSouth Bank.
Blackford was a catalyst for the Lady Lions (22-15, 10-5 SLC) as the team exploded for 57 runs and a 3-1 record last week. The sophomore launched a pair of home runs, brought in 14 RBI and accounted for eight runs herself on 12 appearances at the plate. In addition to an .833 batting average, Blackford tallied a 1.667 slugging percentage and a .875 on-base percentage.
Landry pulsed her Nicholls (20-16, 9-3 SLC) squad to a 4-0 record last week with a trio of complete game victories for the Colonels. The senior delivered a 0.35 ERA over 20 innings of play in addition to a .173 opponent batting average. She retired 22 batters while allowing just one run over her three appearances.
The award marks the first of the season for Blackford and the second of the season for Landry.
Softball Hitter of the Week – Madisen Blackford, Southeastern Louisiana – OF – So. – Des Moines, Iowa
Blackford hit .833 for the week with two home runs, four doubles and 14 RBI, helping SLU to a three-game Southland Conference series sweep at Incarnate Word. She tied a single-game school record with three doubles in Friday’s 15-3 series-opening win. She recorded a home run and five RBI in each of the final two games of the series. Blackford also helped SLU set school records for runs in a game (21), a doubleheader (36) and a Southland series (54).

Softball Pitcher of the Week – Megan Landry, Nicholls – Sr. – Pierre Part, La.
Landry tossed three more complete games for the Colonels, going 3-0 with a 0.35 ERA and 22 strikeouts for the week. She allowed just one earned run and struck out 13 against Northwestern State, which entered the weekend atop the Southland standings, as she clinched the series with wins in the first two games. Including her one-hit effort against Southern, Landry strung together 17 consecutive shutout innings before NSU scored in the fifth inning of game two. Earlier in the week, she surpassed 500 career strikeouts following her performance against Southern.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
