HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana football team continued preparations for next month’s season opener on Monday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.

Monday marked the fourth practice of Southeastern’s preseason camp. SLU head coach Frank Scelfo, the reigning Southland Conference Coach of the Year, has been impressed by the unity he sees developing within his team.

“I’m really liking the way we’re coming together as a team,” Scelfo commented. “The camaraderie and support for each other is there and that’s a sign of a successful team. As a coach, you want to see our best players also be our best people and we’re seeing that.”

Throughout fall practice, the team portions of practice featured fierce competition between the offense and defense. Monday’s fourth practice of spring was no different with big plays made on both sides of the ball. Scelfo has been pleased with the give-and-take between the Lion offense and defense thus far this spring.

“We’ve got good players on both sides of the ball,” Scelfo said. “We don’t ever want to see one side dominate in practice and right now, we’re seeing our playmakers make things happen on offense and defense.”

Southeastern officially opens the spring semester on Wednesday.

“Our players have been doing a good job staying focused and locked in on the things we need to do on and off the field,” Scelfo stated. “We’re expecting more of the same with the start of the spring semester.”

Southeastern will return to the Strawberry Stadium turf on Tuesday for a 2:15 p.m. practice. SLU is scheduled to open its six-game, conference-only spring schedule on Feb. 27 at Sam Houston State. The Lions host McNeese on March 6 at Strawberry Stadium to open its home schedule.
