SLU freshman Newsome earns second Southland volleyball weekly honor

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana outside hitter Kailin Newsome earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, the league office announced Tuesday.

Newsome recorded double-doubles in all three of the Lady Lions’ conference matches this past week, including a career-high 26 kills and 16 digs in Saturday’s win at then second-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The freshman from Houston, Texas posted 11 kills and 13 digs in a five-set loss to Sam Houston before picking up 19 kills and setting a career best with 16 digs in a four-set win against Nicholls.

She averaged 4.00 kills per set over the course of the week, combining for 56 kills in 14 sets.

Newsome ranks third in the Southland in both kills (118) and kills per set (4.21).

Southeastern (5-3, 3-2 Southland) wraps up its road trip, March 9, at Lamar before returning to the University Center for its final homestand of the season.

SOCIAL DISTANCING ON GAMEDAYS
Proper social distancing techniques are required at all athletic events. Fans are asked to maintain a minimum distance of six feet from others, wear a face covering over both their nose and mouth, and wash their hands frequently. Hand sanitizing stations are located throughout Southeastern’s athletic facilities.

While tailgating is currently prohibited, current health and safety guidelines set forth by state and local officials due to the COVID-19 pandemic allow for 25 percent capacity at athletic events. Capacity will be adjusted as state guidelines allow.

DIGGIN’ IT CLUB / S CLUB
Fans interested in becoming active supporters of the Southeastern volleyball program are encouraged to join the Diggin’ It Club. Lion volleyball alums are encouraged to join the exclusive S Club, which is restricted to Southeastern athletic letter winners.

All membership fees and donations to both the Diggin’ It Club and S Club (volleyball) are available for the exclusive use of the Southeastern volleyball program.
