HAMMOND, La. – The defending Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University football team has opened spring practice this week at Strawberry Stadium.

SLU completed two of its 15 spring workouts this season. Reigning SLC Coach of the Year Frank Scelfo has been pleased with what he’s seen from his Lions during the opening week.

“The energy has been very good thus far and I’ve been pleased with our attention to detail,” Scelfo commented. “We’ve been able to get everyone good reps by splitting the teams in two during team drills. It’s not only helped us from an evaluation standpoint, but it’s creating good competition on both sides of the ball.”

Saturday’s 10 a.m. workout will see the team strap on full pads for the first time this spring. Scelfo is eager to see how his team responds.

“We want to continue to be a more physical football team,” Scelfo said. “We want to see how guys embrace the physicality and we’ll start building our identity. Are we physical enough to run the football when we need to and are we physical enough to stop the run when we need to? We’ll be able to start answering those questions when the pads go on.”

The Lions are scheduled to open the 2023 regular season Sept. 2 at Mississippi State.
