HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana first-year head football coach Frank Scelfo was pleased with what he saw from his new squad through the opening week of spring practice, which wrapped Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

SLU opened spring practice on Tuesday afternoon, before holding a Thursday afternoon workout and closing the first week with a two-hour practice on Saturday. Scelfo says the Lions will not hold any full scrimmages during the spring before the April 21 Spring Game.

Through the first three practices, Scelfo has been pleased with what he’s seen from his student-athletes.

“We were really pleased with the energy through the first week,” Scelfo said. “It’s a learning curve for both the players and coaches. We’re learning what our players are capable of and the players are learning what the expectations are. We’ve seen our players start to adjust and grow during this first week.”

Scelfo wants the Lions to continue to grow during the 15 spring practices and beyond in preparation for a challenging 2018 slate.

“We’re looking for the players who can take the knowledge they’re learning in the meeting rooms, bring it to the field and execute and make plays for us,” Scelfo commented. “It will be a constant evaluation process, not just during spring, but over the summer and through fall camp.”

Southeastern will open week two of spring practice with a 4 p.m. practice on Tuesday. The Lions will open their 2018 season at in-state FBS foe ULM on Sept. 1.
