HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana head men’s basketball coach Jay Ladner announced the hiring of former SLU assistant coach Michael Cyprien Thursday morning.

Cyprien Jr.’s hire is pending approval of the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors.

This will be Cyprian’s second stint with SLU. He was hired by the Lions as an assistant coach in March of 2011 and stayed three seasons under head coach Jim Yarbrough before departing for Arkansas-Monticello University where he coached from 2014-16.

The New Orleans native played in 47 games for Southeastern in his career where he helped the Lions to a pair of Southland Conference championships and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a defensive specialist that helped guide SLU to the 2003-04 regular season Southland Conference championship and the conference tournament championship in 2004-05 where he finished third on the team in steals as a junior.

“We are very excited to have Cyprien join our staff,” said Ladner. “He checks so many boxes that we look for in a potential coach. He’s a former Lion, outstanding assistant on Coach (Jim) Yarborough’s staff here, has Division 1 experience, a native of New Orleans but most of all is a man of character who will represent our program and university in a first lass manner. He is a hard-working, bright young coach who brings so much to our staff.”

After graduating from SLU in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in industrial design, Cyprien began his coaching career in 2010 at Rogers State (Okla.) University. He helped the Hillcats to a 22-12 record, a No. 25 national ranking and a berth in the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, where they advanced to the national quarterfinals. The Hillcats closed out the regular season winning 14 of their final 18 games, including wins over No. 10 Oklahoma Baptist and No. 12 Southern Nazarene over a five-day span.

Cyprien was an assistant coach at Independence Community College from May 2016 until being rehired by SLU Thursday.
