Slidell’s Jacob Bergeron to play in PGA event this week
Slidell native Jacob Bergeron will play in his fourth PGA TOUR event this week and first in more than two years after qualifying for the Fortinet Championship in Napa, California.
Bergeron grabbed one of four spots available in the Monday qualifier by shooting a 7-under-par 65, then birdieing the first hole of a five-man playoff for the final two spots in the field.
Bergeron’s last start on the PGA TOUR was in August 2021 in the Wyndham Championship. He has one start in a major after qualifying for the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
In 37 career starts on the Korn Ferry Tour, Bergeron has one runner-up finish, in the 2022 Live and Work in Maine Open.
Bergeron, who was home schooled before playing one season at LSU in 2017-18, begins his first round at 4:17 p.m. CDT Thursday. Max Homa is the two-time defending champion in the event.
The Fortinet Championship is the first of a seven-stop fall season as the PGA TOUR transitions back to a calendar year schedule.
