Make it seven in a row for Slidell football.

The Tigers methodically mowed down rival Covington 36-7 at L.V. McGinty Stadium to remain unbeaten in District 6-5A play. The win Friday night clinched at least a share of the district crown for Slidell.

Things actually started badly for Slidell.

Caden Heck recovered a muffed punt at the Slidell 18-yard line and David Harris scored on a 6-yard run to give the Lions a 7-0 first quarter lead.

That was the highlight for Covington and its last lead.

Slidell scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Luke Guidry to Jahyde Williams to make it 7-6 and the Tigers took the lead for good on a two-point conversion 8-7.

Following a fumble by Covington recovered by Cameron Ducre, Guidry scored on a 1-yard run to make it 15-7.

Slidell broke the game open late in the second quarter.

First, Guidry hit Cole Koretzky on a 6-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-7.

Then, Slidell recovered the ensuing kickoff and that set up a 21-yard touchdown pass from Guidry to Ethan Riley with four seconds to play in the half to make it 29-7 by halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Carter raced 42 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter to account for the final margin of victory.

Guidry completed 17-of-27 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, negating a pair of interceptions. Kendall Carter rushed eight times for 111 yards and a touchdown.

The Slidell defense, outstanding all season long, held Covington to just 50 total yards.

Slidell coach Malter Scobel was very pleased with the team’s overall performance.

“It was one of our better games of the year,” Scobel said. “We tackled well. They have two good backs. We knew we had to stop the run. It was just a good overall performance. We were balanced offensively. We have possessed the ball more recently and we are scoring. Our running game is there and Luke is getting it done throwing it.”

Slidell (7-1, 5-0) will travel to Fontainebleau next Friday night while Covington (5-3, 3-2) will host Northshore, also on Friday night.

“We are peaking at the right time,” Scobel said. “This is when you have to be playing your best ball. We will get back to work Monday and fix what we have to fix. Our goal is to win the district title. We try to be 1-0 every week.”
