Area Prep Baseball Report for Friday, Feb. 28

The annual WGNO Baseball Classic opened Thursday at four sites with Archbishop Shaw posting a pair of victories.

In his return to Shaw, Doug Faust guided the Eagles to an 8-4 win over Chalmette and a 4-1 win over Franklinton at Chalmette.

After defeating Franklinton 4-1, the Eagles were trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning to Chalmette before erupting for six runs to overcome the Owls.

At Mike Miley Stadium, Archbishop Rummel moved to 2-0, overcoming an early deficit to defeat Westminster Christian 11-3.

The Raiders trailed 3-0 going to the bottom of the fourth when the bats awakened, scoring five runs and following it up with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth inning.

Notre Dame signee Jackson Dennies paced Rummel with three hits and four RBI while Kyle Walker had two hits, including a double and three RBI. Josh Sterling doubled and drove in two runs.

James Virga picked up the win in relief for Rummel, pitching two and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Virga walked one and struck out four.

Brother Martin opened its season with an impressive 11-1 win over Fontainebleau in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The Crusaders jumped all over the Bulldogs with six runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the bottom of the second. After Fontainebleau scored a run in the top of the third inning before Brother Martin ended it with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Johnson led a 10-hit attack for the Crusaders with three hits, including a double, and three RBI while Brennan Stuprich and Eli Booth each had two hits and two RBI. Stuprich picked up the win, going the distance, using just 71 pitches. Stuprich allowed no earned runs on just three hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Victor Schilleci took the loss for Fontainebleau. Will Kinzeler had two of the three hits for the Bulldogs.

In a wild game, Hahnville outlasted Westminster Christian 10-9.

It looked like the Tigers would win easily as they scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-0 lead and made it 7-0 with a run in the fourth inning.

Westminster Christian began its comeback with two runs in the top of the fifth and erupted for seven runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. Hahnville answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to trail 9-8.

The Tigers won it with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win a thriller.

A wild pitch scored the tying run before Collin Zeringue won it with an RBI single. Zeringue led the Tigers (1-1) with three hits and two RBI. Ryan Barbier and Ethan Chacon each added three hits for the Tigers. Seth Whitney started and pitched four and two-third innings for the Tigers, allowing just two earned runs. Vladimir Furl pitched two innings in relief, striking out four to pick up the victory.

Jesuit shutout Ruston 3-0 behind the shutout pitching of Brian Valigosky.

Parker Serio got the Blue Jays (2-0) the only runs they needed with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning before Giovanni Licciardi added an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning to account for the Blue Jay runs.

Lakeshore defeated Holy Cross 4-3 at Holy Cross Park in a wild contest.

Lakeshore led 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning behind Jacob Moore before Holy Cross rallied with a hit batter and two walks. The Tigers scored all three runs.

Chandler Welch pitched into the seventh inning for Holy Cross with lance Lauve taking over. After a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt, Lakeshore cut the lead to 3-2 as a wild pitch scored Christian Westcott.

Holy Cross (1-1) appeared to have the game on a groundout but an appeal by Lakeshore coach Steve Ceravolo ruled that the hitter, Tyler Gegenheimer, was ruled safe, scoring the tying run to make it 3-3 as the game continued.

A balk scored the winning run for the Titans (2-0). Westcott came on in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the save.

The Tigers fell to 1-1.
