Don’t look now… or perhaps you should take a peak at Archbishop Shaw.

After a slow start to the season with losses to good teams in St. Charles Catholic and Archbishop Rummel, the Eagles are flying a bit below radar but they are flying high.

Shaw won its fourth straight game, scoring an impressive 38-14 victory over a solid Belle Chasse team at Belle Chasse in a key District 10-4A meeting Friday night.

After the Eagles took a 3-0 lead, Alfred Carter capped a nice drive for Belle Chasse with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Cardinals a 7-3 first quarter lead.

Shaw came right back as speedy running back David Kency scored on a six-yard run to give Shaw a lead it would not relinquish at 10-7 in the second quarter.

Quarterback Mason Wilson then ran it in from five yards out to make it 17-7.

Jaedon Voison, who earlier had a 50-yard run, broke six tackles and raced 77 yards for a touchdown for the Cardinals to cut the deficit to 17-14.

Shaw quarterback Chase LaCava then lengthened the lead with a six-yard touchdown run to make it 24-14 Eagles at the half as Shaw scored on all four of its possessions in the half.

The Shaw defense blanked Belle Chasse in the second half and scored twice to secure the victory. Gavin Richard scored on a 23-yard run in the third quarter and Kency capped the scoring with a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Kency was superb, rushing for 219 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Eagles. Voison rushed for 196 yards for Belle Chasse.

Speaking on Ken Trahan’s Original Prep Football Report Friday night on NASH ICON 106.1 FM, Shaw coach Hank Tierney talked the new days at Shaw versus the old days he once new.

“Somewhere, Joe Zimmerman’s smiling because it’s old-school Archbishop Shaw football by running the ball and playing good defense,” Tierney said. “David Kency had 219 yards and LaCava had almost 100 yards so we ran the ball really well and played good defense in the second half.”

The Eagles showed true growth win the win over the Cardinals.

“We told our kids we played two really good teams and lost,” Tierney said. “We played our third really good team tonight to see if we were getting better or not. We responded against a good Belle Chasse team. I’m very happy with the progress, with the total team win tonight.”

In his second stint at the school that made him famous and that he made famous, Tierney is basking in the glow of the return to Marrero.

“I’m really enjoying it,” Tierney said. “We have put together a great coaching staff and just outstanding kids. We’ve been really working hard since January. It’s been a lot of fun watching this team get better.”

Shaw travels to Patterson next Friday night in a non-district game while Belle Chasse (4-3, 0-1) lost its third straight after a 4-0 start and the Cardinals play at Hoss Memtsas Stadium against Higgins next Friday night in a District 10-4A contest.
