Season high in hits not enough for ‘Cakes in 10-9 loss to Chihuahuas

El Paso – The New Orleans Baby Cakes pounded out a season-high 17 hits but fell short in a 10-9 loss Wednesday night to the El Paso Chihuahuas.

New Orleans has dropped nine in a row in Southwest University Park dating back to 2014.

The host Chihuahuas pounded four home runs including three-run shots by Ty France and Jose Pirela.

The ‘Cakes and Chihuahuas battled back and forth and New Orleans tied the game in the top of the eighth inning with a Lewis Brinson single. The lead-off hitter in the bottom of the inning, Seth Mejias-Brean, smacked a solo home run to give El Paso the 10-9 lead and Andres Munoz retired the ‘Cakes in order in the ninth inning.

The New Orleans offense got big nights from Tyler Heineman and Brinson each with three hits. Isan Diaz and Magneuris Sierra added two hits. The Baby Cakes drop to 35-31 on the season.

GAME NOTES – The ‘Cakes have lost four of five and fall to 11-6 in series openers. Isan Diaz extended his hitting streak to 13 games. The ‘Cakes opened a stretch of 30 of 39 games on the road.

UPCOMING – The ‘Cakes and Chihuahuas meet Thursday at 8:05pm in second of three game set (RADIO–WODT SPORTS 1280 AM or cakesbaseball.com).

NEXT HOME GAME – The ‘Cakes return home Thursday, June 19 to play Nashville in a four-game homestand.
