DESTREHAN – Timing is everything.

Destrehan opened its season slowly, going 4-8 against a very difficult schedule. For Hahnville coach Dave Baudry, that would not have been such a bad time to play his arch-rival.

Unfortunately, the schedule dictated a different scenario. By the time the Wildcats got to the Tigers, they were a totally different team.

That was evident again Thursday afternoon as the red hot Wildcats blanked the suddenly struggling Tigers 7-0 to complete a two-game sweep of their District 7-5A series.

Senior Bryce Scioneaux was dominant, pitching a complete game five-hitter. Scioneaux walked just two and struck out nine, using 105 pitches in the victory.

“It’s a great feeling, a great atmosphere tonight, everything was working,” Scioneaux said. “It was just great to be here tonight. I was hitting my spots. I was a little iffy at the end, but I found my spots, got my adrenaline back and I was fine. It was great to get those three runs in the first inning. It got some of the pressure off of my back. I didn’t want them to get any runs. The rivalry, I don’t want them to get anything at all.”

The win was the eighth straight for Destrehan (12-8, 2-0). The Wildcats edged Hahnville 4-3 on Tuesday. It is the first sweep for the Wildcats over the Tigers since 2014.

“They are playing very well right now,” Baudry said. “They are pitching and catching it very well and playing with confidence and we are not.”

Hahnville provided way too much help to Destrehan, committing seven errors behind losing pitcher Matt Champagne as six of the seven runs were unearned as the Tigers lost their fourth straight game.

“That’s very much not who we are,” Baudry said. “They had some really tough at bats against Matt. When you’re facing a guy (Scioneaux) of that caliber, you’re not going to get a lot of base runners. We didn’t have a lot of base runners. We faced the best two pitchers in the district, unquestionably. Those two guys are really good. We’ve got to back tomorrow and right the ship. We’re in a bit of a tailspin. We’ve got to figure it out and figure it out fast.”

The Wildcats jumped on top immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. TJ Thomas and Bryce Rochelle singled and Dustin Joliff drove home Thomas with a single to make it 1-0. With two outs, Avery Schexnaydre hit a grounder to that resulted in an error, allowing two runs to score to make it 3-0.

Destrehan put up another three-spot in the third inning. Thomas again started the rally as he was hit by a pitch and Rochelle reached on an error. Joliff singled home Thomas to make it 4-0 with two more runs scoring on errors to make it 6-0.

The Wildcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, without the benefit of a hit. Thomas was again hit by a pitch, Rochelle reached on an error and Joliff bunted on a safety squeeze and Champagne could not handle it as Thomas scored to complete the scoring.

Champagne went four innings, allowing seven runs but only one earned on four hits. He waslked one and struck out five. Jack Stumbo pitched two scoreless innings for the Tigers (10-11, 0-2).

Joliff was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Destrehan offense while Josh Nunez had a pair of hits for Hahnville.

“We talked after Tuesday just about handling ourselves a little better, just trying to control some of the excitement, some of the emotion that come along with this game,” Destrehan coach Chris Mire said. “Scioneaux, that’s the guy we’ve been watching all year. His last outing was a little shaky. That’s the guy we’ve been seeing on the bump all year for us. I tried to get him out in that last inning but he wanted the last three outs and he went out and got the job done. Great job by him.”

Mire knows the formula for the current win streak and what it will take to continue it.

“Continuing to put pressure, continuing to have good at-bats and just playing clean baseball,” Mire said.

Both teams return to 7-5A action Saturday as Destrehan entertains Central Lafourche at 1:30 p.m. while Hahnville travels to Reserve to face East St. John, also at 1:30 p.m.
