The black and gold colors of the New Orleans Saintsare distinctive but the players have worn only gold helmets except for one preseason game back in 1969.

That is about to change.

The Saints have unveiled alternate blaack helmets they intend to wear at times during the 2022 season.

The NFL is now allowing teams to wear alternate helmets. New Orleans alternate helmets will be black with a gold fleur-de-lis logo in gold in a flip-flop from the normal headgear.

Cam Jordan is seen in a Saints tweet modeling the black helmet with the team’s popular white ‘Color Rush’ uniform.

The league previously barred teams from having alternate helmets due to safety concerns for the players, who were to wear the same properly-fitted helmet all season. New NFL policy mandates all players are fitted at training camp for all helmets they are to wear during the season.

The Saints wore a black helmet in a 1969 preseason game but owner John Mecom did not register the uniform change with the NFL. The team has not otherwise switched from the gold helmets with black fleur-de-lis they have have worn otherwise since their inaugural 1967 season.
