Saints Roster Moves: Tre’Quan Smith released, QB Luton signed, RB Merritt and OL Norton no longer on practice squad

The New Orleans Saints released wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith from injured reserve on Tuesday.
ESPN’s Field Yates also reported the signing of quarterback Jake Luton from the Carolina Panthers practice squad onto the Saints’ active roster.
The Saints are signing QB Jake Luton off of the Panthers’ practice squad to their 53-man roster, per source.
With Derek Carr banged up and Jake Haener suspended for 3 more games, Luton adds depth. This ensures Luton at least 3 weeks of pay at the 53-man roster rate.

New Orleans also released running back Kirk Merritt from their practice squad and lost offensive tackle Storm Norton off their practice squad when he was signed to the active roster of the Atlanta Falcons.
In his sixth NFL season, Smith was a former third round pick by New Orleans in 2018. He started this season on IR with a hamstring injury.
Luton has been with five NFL teams including New Orleans. At the end of the 2022 season, he was on the Saints practice squad.
