Sacred Heart, Sarah T. Reed open volleyball season with wins Monday

Area Prep Volleyball Report for Tuesday, Aug. 30

After winning a state championship in 2020 and reaching the quarterfinals a year ago, Academy of the Sacred Heart of New Orleans is ready to make a run at a state title this season.

The Cardinals started the season in good form Monday with a sweep of St. Martin’s Episcopal 25-13, 25-13, 25-10 in Metairie.

Mary Mazzanti led the way with 14 kills and a pair of aces while Gigi Gibbens added 13 kills. Kate Farris had seven kills and two aces, Brooke Habetz produced 27 assists, Katherine Hale went down for 12 digs and Lucy Vaicius served two aces for the Cardinals.

Sacred Heart returns to action Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at defending Division III state champion Archbishop Hannan in a blockbuster matchup while the Saints return to action today, hosting Crescent City Christian at 4:30 p.m.

Sarah T. Reed earned a hard fought four-set win over Abramson in thehr season opener. The Olympians won 25-12, 25-21, 12-25, 28-26.

Jayla Chauvin had six kills, six blocks and five digs, Kristy Jupiter has two kills and four blocks, Carlan Tran contributed five aces and four digs, Taylor Smith finished with 10 digs and two aces and Jamya Hills served three aces and had three digs.

Sarah T. Reed returns to action Sept. 6, hosting M.L. King Charter while the Commodores are back in action today at 5 p.m. at Collegiate of Baton Rouge.
