Monica and Rummel

A pair of powerful programs will collide Friday night in Shreveport as defending Division I state champion Archbishop Rummel will face Division III power Calvary Baptist at 7 p.m.

Rummel coach Nick Monica is thrilled that his kids have a chance to play again.

“We talked over the weekend because I heard they were looking, Monica said. “They were waiting on an opponent. They have no positive cases for virus in their program. They called me today around 4 p.m. and we were able to work it out. I sent the kids home today at 3 p.m. thinking they were not playing and they were very disappointed. Then, my phone rang and we glad to take the game against a quality, very good opponent.”

The Raiders lost their game this week with Archbishop Shaw due to COVID-19 concerns. Rummel officials has talks with many schools about possibly playing this week without success before the Calvary game was arranged.

Rummel (1-0) blanked Hammond 41-0 on Oct. 2 but its game at St. Thomas More last week ago was canceled due to Hurricane Delta complications. Exams and travel arrangements were issues for Rummel, and a suitable date for rescheduling could not be found.

Cavalry (1-1) lost to Class 5A Byrd, 35-27, before defeating Lincoln Prep, 59-0.
