Riverside, Ben Franklin, SSA, Pope John Paul, ASH among first round volleyball winners Wednesday

RESERVE – No. 7 seed Riverside Academy opened its run toward a trip to Lafayette with a 25-6, 25-5, 26-24 win over District 6-V rival Ascension Christian in the opening round of the Division V playoffs Wednesday.

The Rebels easily controlled the first two sets and appeared headed for an easy victory but the Lions fought hard, took the lead for most of the third set before the Rebels fought off a set point and rallied o win the set and the match.

Lanie Hymel served seven aces, five digs, two kills and two assists. Chloe St. Pierre had seen kills, 13 assists, seven digs and served four aces. Myracle Revon had seven kills, three aces and three digs.

Riverside (19-16), which won both regular season matches in straight sets over the Lions, will host No. 10 St. Martin’s Episcopal Thursday at 5 p.m. The Saints advanced on Tuesday with a four-set win over No. 23 Highland Baptist.

The two teams know each other well, having been district rivals until this year.

In Division II, No. 3 Ben Franklin took care of No. 30 Neville 25-8, 25-10, 25-9 on the Lakefront.

Cori Staes had 12 kills and two blocks, Aubrey Muirhead had eight kills, four aces and three blocks, Lilly Mayes had 21 assists and served three ace and Kat Kondkar had 10 assists

The Falcons (38-6) will host No. 14 South Lafourche in the regional round. The Tarpons whipped No. 19 Ellender in three sets.

No. 6 St. Scholastica handled No. 27 East Jefferson 25-123, 25-5, 25-6 in Covington.

Laurel Bobrowski led the Doves with nine kills and two aces, Sophia Schega had seven kills, Julia Whitfield had seven kills and three blocks, Camilla Cureington had five digs and four aces, Isabella Rodrigue dished up 13 assists and Emily Devlin added 11 assists.

St. Scholastica (23-14) advances to the regional round to take on the winner of Wednesday’s match pitting No. 22 LaGrange at No. 11 Riverdale.

In Division IV, No. 2 Pope John Paul II easily defeated No. 31 Donaldsonville 25-5, 25-2, 25-3.

Ali Tullis was a force with 26 assists, 10 aces, six digs and four kills. Gabby Beaudette had eight kills, three digs and an ace. Kayla Benedic served 10 aces with seven kills and six digs. Jayden Campbell had four kills and five digs. Reagan McVay notched six digs and served five aces and Peyton Natal had five digs and four aces.

The Jaguars (24-8) advance to host No. 15 Port Allen Thursday at 5 p.m. Port Allen dismissed No. 18 Sarah T. Reed 25-11, 25-4, 25-13.

Also in Division IV, No. 6 Academy of The Sacred Heart of New Orleans easily handled No. 27 South Plaquemines 25-2, 25-4, 25-9.

Gigi Gibbons led the Cardinals with 14 kills, Kate Farris had eight kills and Mary Caroline had six kills. Brooke Habetz finished with 25 assists and Katherine Hale had seven aces and seven digs.

The Cardinals (24-10) will next host No. 11 Springfield in the regional round. Springfield eliminated No. 22 Baker in straight sets.
