Riverside Academy and Carver will finally get a chance to play their first game of the season when the two schools square off Saturday at 7 p.m. at Pan American Stadium.

The Rebels had games with Thomas Jefferson and Newman canceled while the Rams lost games with St. Amant and Helen Cox to the impact of Hurricane Ida.

Carver was originally scheduled to play West Jefferson on Friday but the Buccaneers are unable to play until next week.

“We have about 30-32 players here out of about 40 players,” Riverside coach Kevin Dizer said. “I’m ready. We got back and I didn’t think we could play this early and we got kids back and you could see it written all over their faces. They wanted to play. We reached out trying to find a game and Carver was in the same position. We’re happy to have a chance to play.”

Carver coach Byron Addison has worked feverishly to get his team back in action.

“We finally got a game!” Addison said. “We have not played since our scrimmage. We definitely need it. I think it is huge for the kids to be able to play and that they are still showing up to practice and putting in the work and now they will be rewarded for their work. I told them that. This is a blessing.”
