With games missing from Group of 5 schedules due to cancellations by Power 5 and FCS schools due to COVID-19, programs at places like Tulane and South Alabama are trying to be creative to fill the gaps.

Tulane and USA are discussing playing a game on September 12 in what would be the opener for the new on-campus Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile, JagsJungle.com reports.

If the schools come to an agreement, Jags Jungle indicates it will lead to changes in an existing contract between the two schools. Tulane is scheduled to host South Alabama at Yulman Stadium in 2023 and 2026 and the Green Wave is slated to visit Mobile in 2025. The Tulane road game may be in essence moved up to this fall if the schools agree.

Tulane lost a road game at Northwestern on Sept. 12 when the Big Ten decided to play a conference-only schedule this season while South Alabama lost their opponent on that date, Grambling, when the SWAC postponed their schools’ football seasons until the spring.

Both the Sun Belt and The American have decided this week to play their previously scheduled conference slates while allowing schools to play up to the allowed 12 regular season games using out-of-conference opponents.
