Lutcher, La. – In a battle of recent state champions, the bats were ringing, stinging the baseball early and often Tuesday night.

In the end, Jesuit-based Retif Oil scored a lot early and a lot late in a 12-5 victory over the Lutcher-based Atalco Bulldogs in CCS Prep Summer League action in a game broadcast live at CrescentCitySports.com.

Retif Oil banged out 16 hits. William Good had three hits, including a double with an RBI and scored twice. Everett Denny added three hits and scored twice. Will Soter had two hits, including a double and two RBI, Jackson Stopa had two doubles and two RBI and Alex Jeansonne added a hit and two RBI.

In the most unusual start to a game, the first inning and a half saw each team begin its inning with three straight singles to start each frame, loading the bases.

In the top of the first, Good, Denny and Hunter Oufnac all singled and Good scored on a bases loaded walk to Jeansonne to make it 1-0. Soter followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0 Retif Oil.

Atalco answered strongly, tying the game with thee runs. Marshall Louque, Brock Louque and Kai Brown all singled to load the bases and Colin Roques drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Quinn Smith drove in a run with a groundout to make it 3-2 and Luke Babin singled home the tying run and it was 3-3.

Retif Oil recaptured the lead in the top of the second, scoring four runs. Jake Moreci, Good and Denny all singled to load the bases with no outs again before Oufnac singled home Moreci to make it 4-3. Jeansonne grounded out but produced a run and it was 5-3. Stopa completed the uprising with a two-run double to make it 7-3.

The Bulldogs responded again in the bottom of the second as Carson LeBlanc singled, Marshall Louque was hit by a pitch and Brock Louque singled home LeBlanc to make it 7-4.

Retif increased the lead to 8-4 in the top of the fifth on a single by Gates Barre, a stolen base by courtesy runner Derek Delatte and an RBI double by Good.

Atalco (4-3) responded with a solo home run to right off the bat of Luke Babin in the bottom of the fifth and it was 8-5.

Retif Oil (6-1) broke it open in the top of the sixth on wildness and errors by Atalco. Soter doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 9-5. Stopa fanned but reached on a wild pitch. Gates Barre singled and Stopa would score on another wild pitch to make it 10-5. A throwing error scored two more runs to make it 12-5.

Scout Hughes started and went four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits to pick up the win. Daniel Burke pitched two innings, allowing a run on the homer by Babin. Lee Bridgewater finished up, retiring the Bulldogs in order in the seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts.

“We came out early in the game and got three hits right off the bat,” Retif Oil coach Kenny Goodlett said. “We followed up with a good second inning. They did a good job coming back on us but we didn’t fold. After the second inning, we kind of settled in and trusted the defense more. The development is what it is all about and getting a win against a good program and well coached team and getting guys in and producing.”

Smith took the loss, lasting three and two-third innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits. Gavin Gill went an inning and a third, allowing five runs (one earned) and Mason Montz pitched the final inning, a scoreless frame for Atalco. Marshall Loupe reached base in all four at-bats with two singles, a walk and he was hit by a pitch. Babin had three hits, including the home run with two RBI.

With the win, Retif Oil moved into sole possession of first place in the CrescentCitySports.com Prep Summer League after Rummel-based Malcolm Dienes edged John Curtis Christian-based River Ridge 2-1.
