BOUTTE – Smarting from a 10 run loss to rival Hahnville on Monday, Destrehan was suitably motivated to extract revenge Wednesday against the Tigers.

With a district championship on the line, the Wildcats got the job done.

Destrehan broke open a tie game with four runs in the decisive sixth inning in a 5-2 victory in a game broadcast live at CrescentCitySports.com. The win clinched the outright District 7-5A championship for the Wildcats.

“It’s not everything but it always means something to win district, especially when it comes down to the last game,” Destrehan coach Chris Mire said. “I’m just proud of the way our guys responded. We had a lot of trouble on Monday but a lot of that was due to the fact that Hahnville really played well and we kind of took one on the chin. Fo4 48 hours, we had to listen about how tough a schedule they play and how we got whooped. We took it as a challenge. We know we play a tough schedule as well.”

Destrehan broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth as Ahman Morris singled, TJ Thomas walked and Nathan Rhodes delivered Morris with a two-out single to left field to make it 1-0.

Hahnville tied it in the bottom of the fourth on a walk, an error and a two-out, pinch-hit RBI single by Collin Zeringue to make it 1-1.

Then came the decisive sixth inning.

It started with an error allowing Avery Schexnaydre to reach before Thomas singled and Max Jacob reached on a fielder’s choice. After Rhodes walked starting pitcher Jackson Stumbo exited with the bases loaded.

Collin Maise took over and hit Dylan Weber with a pitch, plating a run to make it 2-1. Maise then walked pinch-hitter Cade Tramuta, plating another run to make it 3-1.

That finished Maise with Vladimir Furl taking over on the mound and on the first pitch he threw, Dustin Weber ripped a two-run double to the wall in left to make it 5-1.

The Tigers cut into the deficit in the bottom of the sixth on a double by David Bernard, a single by Collin Maise and a sacrifice fly by Hayden Theriot to make it 5-2.

Senior Josh MacCord went five and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits to pick up his fourth win of the season. He walked one and struck out nine. Maccord had missed time earlier this season injured. Schexnaydre got the final five outs for the Wildcats.

“It feels great, getting the win, especially over here and to come back after a loss is huge,” MacCord said. “I’ve been working back all year and I feel great.”

Hahnville coach David Baudry gave credit to MacCord.

“He took our aggression away, he was simply outstanding,” Baudry said. “We took a lot of strikes. He used both sides of the plate and had his breaking ball working well. We gave them too many chances in the sixth inning. You cannot do that against a good team and expect to win. It is a little disappointing. We had them coming to our place. We have great respect for them. They had no ill effects from Monday’s game. They came in ready to play.”

Despite the loss, Baudry feels his team is ready to travel wherever they are assigned in the opening round of the playoffs.

“We have played 14 of the top 32 teams in 5A and played five of them twice,” Baudry said. “That should prepare us for the playoffs.”

Mire likes the way his team is playing as the regular season comes to a close.

“There’s a reason that we have 21 wins now because we are a quality club,” Mire said. “Every time these guys have had to answer the bell, they’ve come back and answered it.
