NEW ORLEANS – When you are facing a good team, you cannot afford to give that team a host of free baserunners and expect to win.

Vandebilt Catholic understands that all too well and suffered the consequences Thursday night at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.

The ninth-seeded Terriers hit five batters walked six and committed an error and it proved fatal against No. 8 De La Salle.

The Cavaliers (21-8) took advantage of four hit batters in the bottom of the fifth, coming through in the clutch by scoring six runs with two outs in a 9-4 victory in game one of the best of three Division II series in a game seen live at CrescentCitySports.com.

Cory Cook, a Delgado commit, pitched five strong innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. The senior walked no one and struck out four to pick up the win, using just 55 pitches. He retired the last 11 batters he faced. Cook added an RBI single.

“I felt pretty good, I was spotting up my fastball very well but my off-speed wasn’t really there,” Cook said. “I wasn’t able to throw my curve ball for a strike. I felt like I got a little stronger as the game went on. I warmed up a little too early and sat down for 20 minutes and got cold. It took me a while to get going.”

Vandebilt Catholic Gee Cassard knew it would be tough sledding.

“We knew tonight against Cook that zeroes were needed,” Cassard said. “Tonight, we just didn’t pitch as well as we can. We had a lack of command on the mound, we worked behind on a lot of hitters and hit too many guys. It was hard for us to overcome that against a quality club.”

Vandebilt Catholic (22-10) took the lead immediately with an unearned run in the top of the first inning.

JL Lapeyre started it with a single to center, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Josh Shelly before a throwing error scored Lapeyre 1-0.

De La Salle took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a double by Brayden Bryson, an RBI double by Grant Goodbee and a throwing error to make it 2-1.

The Cavaliers extended the edge in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single by Ty Tubbs, Grant Goodbee was hit by a pitch, Hunter Pulizzano advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Ivan Paz walked to load the bases.

Izzy Fields singled home Tubbs to make it 3-1. Zachary Regira relieved Josh Shelly and escaped a bases loaded jam to avoid further damage.

De La Salle blew it open in the bottom of the fifth as Paz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-1, Izzy Fields singled home two runs to make it 6-1, a double steal of home made it 7-1 and Gavin Freeman doubled home a run and it was 8-1 before Cory Cook singled home another run to make it 9-1.

Vandebilt Catholic got a three-run home run from Brennan Hammer in the top of the seventh inning to complete the scoring.

Victor Cerise pitched a scoreless frame before Kyle Boudoin pitched the seventh inning to finish it off for the Cavaliers.

“We’ve had adversity this year,” De La Salle coach Rowland Skinner said. “I’m proud of my kids. Vandebilt is well coached and they play really good defense and it showed tonight. We finally capitalized and put enough pressure on them I thought as the game went on. Give them a lot of credit for hanging in there. We came through when we needed to and Cory pitched very well.”

Shelly took the loss, going three and one-third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. He walked four and hit a batter. Zachary Regira relieved him and gave up six runs on four hits in an inning and a third. Caleb Ougel went a third of an inning before Owen Schexnayder pitched a shutout inning to finish up for the Terriers.

Fields was 2 for 2 with two walks, a stolen base, a run scored and three RBI while Brayden Bryson had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored for De La Salle. Lapeyre went 3 for 4 with a run scored for the Terriers.

Game two is set for Friday at 4 p.m. with a third game, if needed, to follow Friday at 7 p.m.

“We knew coming in it would be tough tonight against Cook,” Cassard said. “We’re set up for a three-game series. Today’s over with. I feel good about us. We’ve got enough pitching to get us through this round.”
