REPLAY: Bruno does double duty as River Ridge whips Malcolm Dienes in CCSL semifinals

LUTCHER – Wednesday was a busy one for Dagan Bruno.

Going into his junior year at John Curtis Christian, Bruno is a quarterback for the Patriots football team. He also plays baseball for the River Ridge Patriots, the Crescent City Sports Prep Summer League team of John Curtis.

In the morning, Bruno was throwing passes in a 7-on-7 football competition for John Curtis at East St. John.

In the afternoon, Bruno remained in River Parish territory, throwing a different ball for the River Ridge Patriots against Archbishop Rummel-based Malcolm Dienes squad.

By all accounts, Bruno threw the football well in the morning. Unquestionably, He threw the baseball extremely well in the afternoon.

Bruno tossed five shutout innings as River Ridge handled Malcolm Dienes 7-1 in the semifinals of the CCS Prep Summer League at Bulldog Field in a game aired live at CrescentCitySports.com.

River Ridge wasted no time jumping all over Malcolm Dienes, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.

Josh Eames started the uprising with a two-run homer to make it 2-0. Andrew Martinez and Dylan Gilbert were each hit by pitches and Tyler Michell singled to load the bases, finishing Malcolm Dienes starting pitcher Shane Hirstius.

Coleman Capaci relieved Hirstius and Jason Curtis then cleared the bases with a line drive double to the right field wall to make it 5-0. After a two walks and a hit batter, Dagan Bruno drew a bases loaded walk and Eames followed with another bases loaded walk to make it 7-0. Ryan Claverie became the third pitcher of the nightmarish inning for Malcolm Dienes.

Malcolm Dienes (8-2-1) got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a pair of walks and a balk, scoring Gavin Nix, who walked.

Bruno allowed just four hits. Bruno walked no one and struck out five. Cam Romano and Reed Duthu each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Bruno.

LSU commit Mikey Ryan had two of the four hits for Malcolm Dienes. Brady Schmidt came on and pitched three and two-thirds scoreless innings for Malcolm Dienes, walking just one and he struck out five.

River Ridge (11-2-1) advances to the championship game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Jesuit-based Retif Oil at Jesuit’s John Ryan Stadium. Retif Oil edged St. Charles Catholic-based Cretin Townsend Homes 4-3.

The championship game venue has been moved from Bulldog Field to John Ryan Stadium due to light issues at the Lutcher facility.
