Recruiting: Top 25 recruits in metro New Orleans football Class of 2020

The 2019 recruiting chase is in the stretch run. But the top staffs always have an eye to the future.

It’s not too soon to take a sneak peek at what the 2020 recruiting class looks like in regard to the Greater Metro New Orleans area, always fertile territory for top football talent. Here are my top 25 for next year’s class:

1-T.J. Finley (6-6, 225) Ponchatoula QB …already pledged to LSU, he rejected offers fron Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Arkansas, Tulane, North Carolina, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Louisville. The pro style signal caller tallied 1,924 yards in ’17 with 14 TD’s and 6 interceptions. He is highly intelligent, can make all the throws, tremendous upside, still learning the position, but has made great strides. LSU has been on him since 8th grade.

2-Koy Moore (6-1, 170) Rummel WR …committed to USC this past week. Many feel LSU and Tennessee could be players in this before it’s all said and done. Super work ethic. Played in only 5 games last fall after breaking his collarbone in week six. Exceptional hands, routes, run after catch, good concentration and adjusts route to help his QB.

3-Kelvin Burrie (6-0, 205) Helen Cox OLB …currently committed to UTSA. Mickey Joseph has been on him as well as Kansas, Kentucky, Tulane, UAB, West Virginia, Tennessee and Texas A&M. This 4 star can really run, very athletic and skilled to play in coverage.

4-Sedrick Van Pran (6-4, 305) Warren Easton OL …powerful, explosive out of stance. He may play OG at next level. Throws the shot put, discus and javelin in track. Ole Miss, Georgia, Kansas, La. Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, Southern Miss, Texas State have offered.

5-Brandon Williams (6-3, 220) Newman OLB… 4 star prospect. Tallied 45 tackles, 11 TFLs and nine sacks, along with six forced fumbles as a sophomore for Greenies in 2017. Boston College, Colorado, Kansas, Tulane, Texas A&M and Tennessee offered.

6-Ashaad Clayton (6-0, 200) Warren Easton RB… cutback runner, very shifty, balance and patient runner. Currently it looks like an LSU-Georgia battle. Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas, UTSA, Tulane, Kansas and Oregon State in the mix.

7-Darian Branch (6-2, 175) Amite CB… good length, hips, stride for stride with receiver, will come up to challenge versus run. Offers include Auburn, La. Tech, Tulane, Ole Miss, Memphis, Oklahoma State and Kansas. Alabama and Miami are still taking a wait-and-see approach.

8-Bryce Cooper (5-11, 225) Kentwood ILB…downhill tackler, leverage, will jolt runner with collision. Arkansas, Miami, Tulane, La. Tech, Ole Miss,UCF and Texas Tech with offers.

9-Taiwan Berryhill (6-2, 200) St. Augustine OLB… comes off edge quickly, tough to block, good open field tackler. No quit. Tennessee, Kansas, Memphis, Eastern Illinois and Southern Miss hoping to land him.

10- Kyle Edwards (6-0, 190) Destrehan RB… 3 star has been awaiting his turn behind teammate and 2019 Georgia commit John Emery. Edwards has good body lean, breaks tackles, N/S runner, good vision for backside hole, has extra gear. Kentucky and Utah are current suitors.

11-Trenton Grow (6-3, 183) West St. John WR…ideal size for wide out. Redzone threat, terrific leaping ability, adjusts to throw. South Alabama, Tulane, UAB, Nicholls and Northwestern State offers… LSU and Texas A&M are watching.

12-Rack’won Starks (5-10, 173) Helen Cox FS… good tackler, roams the back end of the secondary, good kick returner. Tulane, UAB, UTSA and La. Tech have made offers.

13-Corey Wren (5-10, 170) John Curtis WR…is a blur on field, won 60 meter state title in eighth grade. Boston College, La. Tech, ULM and Mississippi State all monitoring. Tulane has extended offer. He likes Texas A&M but no offer yet.

14-Sonny Hazard (6-1, 280) Jesuit DT… dad John was prep All-American at Jesuit in 1982, earned All-SEC at LSU as OT in 1986. Works extremely hard, very physical, should attract SEC offers eventually. Won’t stay blocked, powerful (365-pound bench press). Strong at point of attack. Great burst. Has drawn interest from Purdue and Vanderbilt. LSU, Tulane, Texas A&M are all watching closely.

15-Cornelius Dyson (6-2, 182) Kentwood athlete… can run, athletic, vicious tackler, closing speed as defensiveback. Will blitz off the edge. 3.5 GPA. Currently committed to Louisiana-Lafayette.

16-Angelo Anderson (6-1, 254) John Curtis DT… pad level, explodes out of stance, swim move, good pursuit. Offers from Colorado, Tennessee and Nicholls.

17-Sharmar Smith (5-10, 160) St. James athlete… good basketball skills plus track runner in 100 meters, 110 meter hurdles, 300 hurdles, Long jump, 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 relay anchor. Kansas, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Tulane, Toledo and Texas State hope to land him.

18-Donovan Johnson (6-1, 180) Helen Cox safety… closing speed, good anticipation, comes up quickly. Offer from Southern Miss. Looks from Louisiana-Lafayette, South Alabama and UTSA.

19-Khi Mathieu (5-11, 160) St. Augustine WR… cousin of Honey Badger, smooth, good separation, willing blocker, good routes. offers from La. Tech, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Tulane and Idaho.

20-Mason Narcisse (6-3, 265) St. Charles Catholic DT… had 40 stops in 2017 with 12 TFLs and six sacks. Heavy hands, hot motor, splits double team, relentless. LSU, Texas A&M, Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, La. Tech watching with interest.

21-Justin Ibieta (6-5, 225) Country Day QB… pro style had 2,099 yards passing last season with 25 touchdowns and only 6 picks. Good follow through, good mechanics, high football IQ. May have future in baseball as right-hander with 83 mph fastball that can become much faster as well as a good changeup. Houston, LSU and Tulane are monitoring.

22-Jamie Vance (5-11, 170) Edna Karr CB… ball skills, transitions well. He has offer from Tulane. Arkansas and Mississippi State are watching.

23-Josh White (5-8, 165) St. Augustine WR… played some QB as soph. Can take game over. Exciting runner, uses body well, understands routes. Arizona State, LSU and Georgia watching.

24-Rodney Johnson (6-1, 180) Edna Karr CB… 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 relay. LSU is watching.

25-Tyler Grubbs (6-0, 225) Holy Cross LB… very physical, always around ball, instincts, shoots gap. Auburn watching closely.
